IS THIS SUITABLE FOR ME?
This is a road / tarmac based tour and does not have any off road riding. This is not a coach tour on two wheels! As long as you are a confident rider you will be ok. Last year we had two new riders and they coped brilliantly
WHAT ARE THE ROADS LIKE
The roads do allow you to pick a pace due to the very nature of their bends, curves and hairpins. There are sections with tight bends and steep inclines and declines
DAY 1 - Champagne Region
Your first day is spent riding through central France into the Champagne region. This evening you shall settle into your Hotel and grab a beer, something to eat and put your feet up before enjoying your comfy bed for the evening.
DAY 2 - Cote D'Azur
You’ll continue south and head towards Switzerland. Passing through the picturesque towns that hug the Alpine regions on the French and Swiss border, one of them being the delightful town of Annecy in France, just a few miles south of Geneva.
Continuing on to Aix Les Bains in the South Eastern corner (Cote D’Azur) region of France just below Annecy and Geneva. Overlooked by impressive Alpine mountains and surrounded by fresh water glacier lakes this area is an incredible delight. You’ll stop for the evening in your 3* hotel with full facilities including a swimming pool to cool down in!
DAY 3 - Route Napoleon - Nationale 85
This is what you’ve been waiting for, not to say that getting here wasn’t any fun, in fact, it is far from it but this is where the thrill and excitement is notched up several bars!
The current Route Napoléon, first opened in 1932, it follows the route taken by Napoléon I (Napoléon Bonaparte) in 1815 on his march from Elba to Grenoble. Napoléon had abdicated in April of 1814 and gone to Elba (history). In March of 1815, he began his journey with the intention to overthrow Louis the 18th. The historical aspect makes this road even better, Napoleon traced the route through the Alps leading to fabulous scenery and views.
The Route Napoleon itself begins in Grasse, the route then continues all the way to Grenoble, tracing its way through both the Alps Maritimes and the Alps. The Route Napoleon road itself is a fantastic design, with cambered corners and fantastic scenery. In contrast with the mountain passes this route is more designed for speed and the ability to really appreciate the performance of the motorbike.
The advantage of the Route Napoleon is that it is much the same smooth rhythm from beginning to end, so you can appreciate any part of the road without needing to confine yourself to one specific part. The smoothness of this route makes it a fantastic riding experience for anyone, which along with the scenery makes for a truly thrilling riding experience with many photo opportunities.
…this route is more designed for speed and the ability to really appreciate the performance of the motorbike
DAY 4 - Gorges Du Verdon
Continuing along Route Napoleon you’ll head for a town called Grasse. Grasse is a commune in the Alpes-Maritimes department, on the French Riviera. The town is considered the world’s capital of perfume, so make sure you have brought plenty of Euro’s to buy your other half something special to take back! It’s not all about spoiling our loved ones today as you have a little treat in store so often missed by other tour groups and individuals.
You head for Gorges du Verdon. Verdon Gorge truly is Europe’s ‘Grand Canyon’ (it is sometimes referred to as the ‘Grand Canyon du Verdon’) and is stunningly beautiful. The canyon has been carved by the Verdon River, leaving the turquoise river now flowing at the base of high limestone cliffs, and because of its exceptional beauty is now officially listed as one of the ‘Grand Sites of France’.
The Gorges du Verdon are found in central Province, with the Var department to the south of the gorge and the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department to the north. Did you know…
- The canyon is up to 700 metres deep and between 100 and 1500 metres across.
- It has taken approximately two million years for the river Verdon to carve the gorges.
- The Natural Regional Park of the Verdon was created in 1997 to protect the unique environment
You stay the evening in Grasse in a good quality hotel.
DAY 5 - Mediterranean Coast
Today you head for the Mediterranean Coast and ride through Cannes and past Nice. You will avoid Monte Carlo and the center of Monaco for this tour due to the busy and chaotic atmosphere and traffic congestion (if you wish to include this in your itinerary let us know and we can arrange this) The heat can be unbearable waiting for hours in traffic and it’s a guaranteed way of losing your way – and patience! So you can avoid fighting the traffic and queues and head North again to Mercantour National Park where you’ll climb steep and winding roads into the Alps leaving the hustle and bustle behind you and reminding you how nice it is to be in the beautiful landscapes, care free and cruising! You head through Apli Maritime and Monte Argentera to name but a few reaching altitudes as high as 3000m!
DAY 6 - Chamonix Monte Blanc
Just when you thought it was all over you head for Albertville, which is a commune in the Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region in south-eastern France. The town is best known for hosting the 1992 Winter Olympics.
You then head for Chamonix, Chamonix-Mont-Blanc (or Chamonix), a resort area near the junction of France, Switzerland and Italy, is renowned for its alpine skiing. It’s at the base of Mont Blanc, the highest summit in the Alps. Year-round, cable cars take visitors up to several nearby peaks with panoramic views, including Aiguille du Midi, Pointe Helbronner on the Italian border and Le Brévent.
20 miles north of Chamonix lies the town of Martigny, where you’ll rest in your hotel or B&B for the evening
DAY 7 - Reims
Heading out of the Alps today and back towards central France, the champagne region. Time to pick up a quick bottle of bubbly!
Reims is a city in France’s Champagne-Ardenne region. It was founded by the Gauls, but its 3rd-century Porte de Mars triumphal arch marks its later Roman conquest. It’s the unofficial capital of the Champagne wine-growing region, and many of the houses headquartered there offer tastings and cellar tours. For more than 1,000 years, French kings were crowned at its Cathédrale Notre Dame
You’ll stay here for the evening and wander into the lovely town for evening drinks for your last night before departing for Calais tomorrow
DAY 8 - Heading home
You head to Calais to catch your train back to the UK late afternoon
